Saving on your next road trip is a great feeling, but it’s frustrating when a discount code doesn't work as expected. Most promo code errors are caused by specific booking requirements, like:
Travel dates
Vehicle types
"First-time user" status
Use this guide to identify why your code is being rejected and how to fix it.
Why am I receiving an error message?
If your code isn't working, it is likely due to a specific restriction set by the Host or Outdoorsy. Here are the most common reasons a code might be rejected:
Bookings can only take one code at a time
You can only use one discount code per booking. If you try to enter a second code, it will replace the first one rather than stacking them.
The code may have expired or no longer be active
Some Outdoorsy promo codes are seasonal and have expiration dates, while Host-created codes may only be valid for specific travel dates.
Incorrect spelling
Ensure the code is entered exactly as provided. Many Host-initiated discount codes use personalized, unique spellings or special characters that must be matched exactly to work.
"First Trip" only rule
Many Outdoorsy-issued codes (like the one received via SMS signup) and some Host-created codes are exclusive to your first-ever booking. If you have rented with us before, these codes will not apply.
Shopping vs. Travel dates
Check the "fine print" of your code. Some codes require you to book by a certain date (Shopping Date), while others only work if your trip happens during a specific window (Travel Date).
Minimum length of stay
Many Host-created codes require a minimum number of nights (e.g., a "4-night minimum"). If your trip is shorter than the required stay, the code will return an error.
Vehicle & location restrictions
Some promotions are only valid for specific Vehicle Types (like Class B vans) or for trips starting in a specific State (e.g., CA or TX).
I used an Outdoorsy discount code, but my subtotal didn't change. Is my code not working?
Your code is likely working, but it’s important to know which part of your booking it covers. Outdoorsy-issued promo codes apply specifically to the Outdoorsy Service Fee, not the nightly rental rate (subtotal).
Check your Price Breakdown: Look at the "Service Fee" line item. You should see the discount reflected there.
Host vs. Outdoorsy codes: Only codes provided directly by a Host will reduce the booking subtotal.
Discount code capping: If your discount is $50 but your service fee is only $30, the discount will be capped at $30.
If you've applied the Outdoorsy promo code but are still having trouble seeing the discount reflected on your booking's service fee, please visit the Why am I receiving an error message? section above.
I’m having trouble with a Host-provided discount code. How do I know if it’s applied?
To see if a Host-created code has been successfully applied, check your Price Breakdown on the checkout page. Keep these specific Host rules in mind:
Check the subtotal: Host codes only discount the nightly rental rate. They will not change the cost of the Outdoorsy service fee, taxes, or protection plans.
Minimum night stay: Many Hosts require a minimum stay (e.g., 3 or 5 nights) for their code to work. If your trip is too short, the code will return an error.
"First Trip" rule: Some Hosts offer discounts specifically for your first time renting from them. If you are a returning guest to that specific Host, the code may not apply.
Dates of travel: Host codes are sometimes seasonal. Ensure your trip dates fall within the Host's specific promotional window.
Pro Tip: If a Host sent you a code and it isn't working, the best first step is to message the Host directly via the Outdoorsy platform. They can verify if the code is still active or if your specific booking meets their requirements.
I've met all the criteria above for the discount code I have, but it still won't work. What do I do?
